Hanover, 12 September 2019 – The city hall has been used, and so has the Linden combined heat and power station. Whenever the world's largest machine tool fair EMO is held in Hanover, a Hanover building is traditionally chosen to be illuminated in the EMO colours after dark. This time the organisers have selected a particularly striking building to become an EMO ambassador from 15 to 21 September. For the first time in its 60-year history, the VW Tower (the former television tower in the heart of the city, known to locals as the "Telemoritz") will be lit up in the EMO Hannover colours – turning it into the tallest advertising pillar in the North.
"We are pinning the EMO's colours to the mast in a highly visible way in Hanover," said Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executive Director of the EMO organiser VDW (Verein Deutscher Werkzeugmaschinenfabriken – German Machine Tool Builders' Association). "We are expecting visitors from all over the world – and they will be welcomed with this spectacular view upon arrival at the main station." Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Managing Board of Deutsche Messe AG, thanked the partners: "Hanover is the best trade fair city in the world. Everyone involved pulled together to get this project off the ground as quickly and unbureaucratically as possible."
Within a few days all obstacles in the way of projecting onto the VW Tower had been removed. The city administration had no reservations, VW as the owner of the tower was impressed by the idea, Deutsche Bahn had no qualms about providing the necessary space for the projectors. And so Jan Kirchhoff's lighting team at Opito Labs in Hanover were able to start planning.
Three modern high-performance laser projectors will light up the VW Tower in the four EMO colours: yellow, magenta, blue and green. The images are projected onto the concrete column from a steep angle and the beams of the three projectors combine to create the 50-metre-high EMO logo specially prepared for projection.
The former telecommunications tower was erected in 1958/59. The then Federal Post Office put it into operation in April 1960. It was one of the first towers in Germany to be built using reinforced concrete. The telecommunications tower in the city centre has also been known as the "Telemoritz" since 1992. That was the year in which the new "Telemax" transmission mast went into operation on the outskirts of the city; the "Telemax" is 119 metres taller than the "Telemoritz". The two names evoke the "Max und Moritz" figures created by Wilhelm Busch. VW took over the tower from Deutsche Telekom in 2000.
