One of the latest developments from NTN is their Ultage small-size, high-speed angular contact ball bearing for machine tool spindles with an internal diameter of 10 to 50 mm. According to the company, they yield low vibrations and provide for a long operating life. The bearings make use of newly designed seals that retain grease within the bearing without affecting cooling or dust prevention performance using compressed air. The seal is said to improve the amount of grease kept inside and the flow of compressed air without negative influences. The grease filling position and amount have also been improved to provide a longer operating life. As is pointed out, small spindles also require a low vibration level since they are often used to improve the appearance of products, such as for enhancing machining precision or providing a fine finish on machined surfaces. The new bearings are reportedly machined with a method that increases the precision of the bearing raceway surface, reducing vibrations by around 50 percent over conventional products.
