The goal of this project, according to SCM, is to develop an intelligent tool-holder capable of recording and transmitting wireless process information such as the vibrations arising from the tool and the workpiece. According to the Italian company, the tool-holder is able to modify machine tool parameters like spindle speed and feed rate in real time, thus optimizing the process. As the manufacturers explain, in milling operations for complex parts, the typically low dynamic stiffness and damping of the long-cantilevered and slender tools can cause tool vibrations. These increase tool loads and therefore accelerate tool wear. As a result, progressive tool wear can damage the tool, which in turn can also damage the workpieces. Optimization methods, adapted tool properties and powerful process monitoring and adaptive control systems are seen as essential measures to enhance the machining performance, reliability and efficiency.
