The device is used to estimate the movements of machine-tool attachments and serves to convert a conventional mechanical boring head into an electronic one with digital readout. As is explained, it can be used to measure the relative motion of metallic elements to an accuracy of 0.5 micrometers and indicate the movements of tool systems to an accuracy of 1 micrometer in diameter. The Russian developers specify a range of measurement of plus/minus 5 mm, a measuring resolution of 0.5 micrometers, and overall dimensions of 56x40x12 mm with a weight of 50 g. Applications are seen with a mechanical boring head, with turning units, with cross-slides, and for the high-accuracy setup of turning and milling machine tools and attachments. Other specific measurement operations are also said to be possible.
