Based in Frankfurt, VDW ( the German Machine Tool Builders’ Association ), represents the interests of the German machine tool industry. In 2016, the association celebrated its 125th anniversary. Together with the VDMA German Engineering Federation, VDW’s voluntary members consist of some 300 mainly small and medium-sized enterprises, accounting for around 90 percent of total industry sales of over 16 billion euros in 2017.
VDW represents its members vis-à-vis the public, governments, business partners and the research community, making it a voice for the German machine tool industry at a national as well as international level. In addition, VDW acts as a competent service provider, supporting its members in things like economic monitoring and market registration as well as on legal, technical and economic issues. Based on its deep knowledge of the industry, VDW provides information on current developments, offering advice on individual matters.
A significant part of the association’s work includes supporting the development of new sales markets, especially abroad. To this end, VDW applies to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy to support exhibitor group pavilions at the world’s most important trade fairs. It organizes technology symposia in leading foreign markets, in which the participants can showcase their expertise exclusively to the main customer industries of the respective country.
In addition, VDW organizes exhibitions for the international machine tool industry. It has almost 100 years of experience in organizing trade fairs and has continuously expanded its expertise during that time. On behalf of Cecimo ( the European Association of the Machine Tool Industries ), VDW organizes the world’s premier trade fair, EMO Hannover, and has its own international trade fair for manufacturing technology and automation, METAV Düsseldorf.
