    Four-stage telescopic ball screw

    Telescopic ball screws are used to perform sophisticated feed and positioning tasks in restricted installation space situations. To meet the increased market demand for even smaller lengths in the retracted state, A. Mannesmann has developed a new four-stage telescopic ball screw as a worldwide innovation. The new concept is based on the incorporation of two two-stage telescopic ball screws, driven by a common motor and that drive inside each other in retracted position. The advantage of this solution is said to become clear with a numerical example that assumes a length of 460 mm in the retracted state. With a conventional two-stage telescopic ball screw, a maximum stroke of 530 mm can be achieved. At the same length in the retracted state, the new four-stage telescopic ball screw reaches a stroke of 1,040 mm, which corresponds almost to a factor of 2.3. Overall, the manufacturers point out, the new four-stage AM telescopic ball screw with a length of 460 mm in the retracted state has the considerable extension length of 1,500 mm.
