Founded in Japan in 1898, the Okuma Corporation not only numbers among the world's most innovative machine tool manufacturers - following the successful launch of two IoT-supported "Dream Site" factories based at its headquarters, the company also boasts extensive smart factory expertise. Smart factory applications and automation technologies designed to boost efficiency are therefore just as important to Okuna's showcase at EMO Hannover 2017 as the grand total of sixteen machines the company has on display. These include no fewer than eight product premières for Europe, such as the highly innovative Laser Ex series of super-multitasking machines for turning and milling operations, laser hardening and additive manufacturing.
The new Laser Ex super-multitasking machines are the first machining centers ever to deliver what is known as the “done-on-one” concept. For instance, the MU-6300V Laser Ex vertical 5-axis machining center is not only designed for milling, turning and grinding workpieces of different shapes and sizes - it also supports additive laser welding (Laser Metal Deposition - LMD) and subsequent heat treatment. Completing hardening within the machine itself is quicker than using conventional methods and also reduces deformations, resulting in significantly improved accuracy and increased throughput.
