Boring spindle assemblies for high-dynamic machines (0615)

A. Mannesmann points out that boring spindle sets with external drives allow the universal use of machining centers for combined milling and boring operations. An additional trend is towards highly dynamic machines with spindle speeds up to 5,000 rpm. The company points to its long experience in manufacturing boring spindle sets with quiet operation, very high precision, and long service life as well as in the machining of customized rams. A typical example is a boring spindle set with a boring spindle of 160x2,800 mm diameter and length, a hollow spindle with 260x1,355 mm diameter and length, a balancing quality smaller than G1, and speeds greater than 3,000 rpm. Both parts are deep-nitrided, ground and lapped as well as paired on a lubrication film thickness of 4 to 5 micron gap width. The machining of both workpieces is carried out by advanced grinding technology, yielding low heat development, very high speeds and high machine center dynamics. The cones for the tool-holder sockets are produced according to customer needs, in SK 50 or other sizes, as well as in Big-Plus designs or with sockets for HSK hollow cone shafts. Boring spindles can also be manufactured with exchangeable cone sleeves.
