Visitors to EMO greeted by drills at the station in Hannover

A novel welcome awaits visitors traveling by train to EMO Hannover 2007. On arrival at the station, they are immediately given an impressive insight into state-of-the-art tool manufacture in the form of a structure over three meters high comprising three huge drills -  a "WALTER", a "TITEX" and a "PROTOTYP" - all of which will be combined under the Walter AG umbrella brand from January 2008. Experts will immediately recognize the three drills. For the less well initiated, they are an indexable insert drill (Walter), a solid carbide drill (Titex) and a tap (Prototyp).

Double the output in half the time

... that's the promise of Dutch automation company Cellro B.V. How is this possible? It's all down to an industrial robot - on show for the first time at EMO Hannover 2007 - that loads and unloads pallets, products and tools in a central store. The new robot cell can be used to automate product processes with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling machines, machining centers, grinding machines and eroding machines, or in conjunction with measuring machines and cleaning systems.

Swarovski subsidiary demonstrates it's all about the right cut

Swarovski crystals and glass beads enjoy virtually universal recognition and are adored by women the world over. Tyrolit-Schleifmittelwerke, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Swarovski Group, is demonstrating at EMO Hannover 2007 that in other sectors too, including the automotive industry, it's all about having the right cut.
As its slogan indicates, the manufacture is exhibiting "More than tools", with customized grinding solutions including the new "TYROLIT-STRATO ULTRA" high-performance grinding tool for creep-feed grinding.
High-porosity grinding wheels cut grinding times and lessen the fire hazard. The new product is suitable for creep-feed grinding of turbine components and steels in different component configurations.

Rod-shaped sensor squeezes into every nook and cranny

A lack of space is often a problem, for example when fitting sensors to measure machine components. At EMO Hannover 2007, MTS Sensor Technologie GmbH is exhibiting the new "Temposonics RD 4" rod-shaped sensor with a pressure-resistant sensor pipe that is connected to a remote electronic head by a flexible cable.
This means that the sensor can also be inserted in cylinders that have to fit into confined spaces to record data that is then sent to the control system.

German premiere of horizontal balancing machine for rotors

The new "PASIO 50" horizontal balancing machine manufactured by Schenck RoTec GmbH is making its German debut at EMO Hannover 2007. Designed to be transported by crane, the machine is suitable for rotors weighing up to 50 kilograms with diameters of up to 600 millimeters and is easy to commission. All that's needed apart from a forklift truck or lifting trolley is a connection to the power supply! No foundations are required and the space-saving design has a 40-60 percent smaller footprint than a conventional machine of this kind. The mineral cast enclosure dampens vibrations ten times more effectively than gray cast iron.

Less wear makes drill a test winner

The new ratio drill from Gühring oHG with patented radius point geometry is extremely stable. In a test at PTW, the Institute of Production Management, Technology and Machine Tools at Darmstadt Technical University, the "RT 100 R" beat all the other drills hands down in terms of the amount of wear when drilling into vermicular graphite cast iron (GGV) 45. The drill was specially developed for use with GGV and austempered ductile iron (ADI) in the automotive industry. GGV and ADI are extremely strong. According to the manufacturer, it has until now been difficult to cut these new materials cost-effectively. Performance and cost-effectiveness can now be improved with the "RT 100 R" drill's patented radius point geometry. The drill will initially be launched as a special tool with internal cooling.

Cleaner grinding with less cooling lubricant

The new filter system being showcased by GKD - Gebr. Kufferath AG at EMO Hannover 2007 in Hannover is called "Maxflow". Using a cross-flow principle whereby filtrate flows around the filter discs, a cooling lubricant can be filtered at a rate of 140 liters per minute in the grinding shop. In 80 percent of the grinding sludge, the dirt particles are less than 15 micrometers in size and the filtrate purity is under 40 milligrams per liter. As a result, the cooling lubricant does not have to be changed as often. Consumption can be cut by up to 60 percent by not using filter aids. A further benefit is that the grinding sludge is discharged as a dry briquet and not mixed with filter aids. This also cuts the volume of waste by a third and dispenses with the need for secondary treatment of wet grinding sludge.

High-tech planetary transmission with galactic options

Conventional planetary transmissions are a variant of a standard gear transmission that are used to distribute force as required. At EMO Hannover 2007, the French division of the Redex Group is exhibiting the "SRP" transmission, a new unit with even more options. It combines machine functions that control dynamic movements on robots, machine tools or special machines. One practical advantage of the "SRP" is that a motor's energy can be transferred to components such as robot arms or positioning tables employing complex movements that require great dynamic scope. The forces acting here mean that the transmission used needs to have a high load-bearing capacity, a feature of the SRP thanks to its very high torsional stiffness. The "SRP" transmission is available in various configurations and provides customized solutions for all applications. Five basic models of the "SRP" can be combined with eight transmission ratios, two backlash levels and bevel gearboxes of all sizes.

Lightning fast - workpiece changes in under a second

Small workpieces are machined in record time with the new "KRONOS Speed" centerless grinding machine. This new development based on the "KRONOS S" series is being exhibited at EMO Hannover 2007 by Studer Mikrosa GmbH. The device can be used for workpieces up to 30 millimeters in diameter and up to 120 millimeters long and is specially designed to operate at high speeds. The integrated workpiece changer - a high-speed centerless loader (HSCL) - lifts the workpieces to be machined with the help of a carrier fluid and changes them in under a second. Either an oil or an emulsion can be used. According to the manufacturer, the new grinding machine is particularly efficient due to its high operating speed and low susceptibility to faults. Given that the "KRONOS Speed" does not require electronically controlled axes, production and maintenance costs should also be lower.
