Award-winning product
- grinding machine changes camshafts in just four seconds
"CamGrind S" is
the new camshaft grinding machine with integrated loading system from Studer
Schaudt GmbH in Stuttgart. The machine is being showcased at EMO Hannover 2007.
Although the machine has an extremely small footprint, it can grind
camshafts up to 65 centimeters in length. It can also be used for machining concave cam profiles thanks to the
patented Schaudt swivel-in spindle. In conjunction with digital drives,
a hydrostatic guideway on the X-axis enables high-precision positioning of the
tool spindle. And what's more, the integrated loading system means that
workpieces can be changed in just four seconds - twice as fast as previously
possible. The small and
versatile machine has already proven its worth by winning the 2007 "Initiative
Mittelstand" (SME Initiative) innovation award.

More teeth bite better
It takes special tools to machine large threads. The "Noris Innenspan"
machine tap from Ernst Reime Vertriebs GmbH Präzisions-Gewindetechnik ensures
more effective machining. The greater number of teeth, combined with optimal
self-guidance achieved through the non-grooved guide section, enhances the
thread quality in production even under unfavorable cutting conditions. The new
tap, which is now on show at EMO Hannover 2007, can also be used for fine
threads.

Record-breaking -
turret heads achieve unprecedented change speeds
Ketterer Maschinenbau GmbH is currently presenting its patented CNC turret heads at EMO Hannover 2007. The manufacturer claims that its special high-speed turret heads achieve unprecedented change and spindle acceleration. The special technology in the direct-driven, water-cooled and zero-backlash drive and spindle system makes for extremely dynamic processes in terms of pivot and spindle acceleration with up to eight spindles. Only the active cutting spindle is driven by the machine - the other spindles remain stationary to prevent undesired vibrations that could impact on the operating process. A variety of spindles can be inserted and combined in the turret head depending on the requirements.

Cylinder roller bearing sets the pace
A new high-speed cylinder roller bearing developed by the Schaeffler
Group has now been equipped with steel rollers, enabling it to achieve speeds
up to 80 percent faster than conventional cylinder roller bearings. The
manufacturer claims that the new component even exceeds the speeds achieved
with hybrid bearings and a brass cage, while having only a negligible impact on
the load-bearing capacity. The bearing has an outer cage made of the
high-performance plastic polyetheretherketon (PEEK) which exhibits far lower
friction than brass cages with rolling elements. As the operating temperature is also lower
because of the reduced friction, less lubricant is required.

Portable measurement system doesn't miss a thing
When used to check machine tools, the new
portable measurement system from Prüftechnik Alignment Systems GmbH can
determine the properties of a machining center, including how flat or straight
it is, its concentricity or its rectangularity. "Axalign" is equipped with a
special patented optical system with robust sensors for industrial
applications. According to information from the manufacturer, the
software for the measurement system was developed in cooperation with elite
universities in Germany. This
new product is being unveiled at EMO Hannover 2007 in Hannover.

Length is crucial - short parts get short shrift
One problem with the production of multi-spindle machines is that parts are sometimes too short. Therefore, it is important that each part is checked closely at the manufacturing stage. At EMO Hannover 2007, Dr.-Ing. K. Brankamp System Prozessautomation GmbH is exhibiting a digital caliper from Huber Systems equipped with Brankamp operator terminals and length measuring software. As a result, each part can be measured in the machine during processing.
This is how it works - the caliper is mounted on a central carriage so as to be able to accurately measure the length of the parts in the material drum during the pivot process. If an error (part too short) is detected, the machine can be shut down immediately and the faulty part removed. The data is recorded and checked on a monitor. The new device can identify even the smallest of errors in next to no time.

Square, practical, good
... is how Zimmer + Kreim GmbH & Co. KG describes its latest product
known as "The Cube". The cavity-sinking EDM machine, which is being premiered
at EMO Hannover 2007, is extremely stable thanks to its cast mineral base. Even
larger parts can be positioned accurately using this machine. For manufacturers
of large workpieces, the new product is equipped with a control unit that can
control six axes as eroding axes. The Cube is therefore ideal for large
individual items and automation.

Intelligent lightweight construction at EMO 2007
Cars, aircraft and mechanical and plant engineering companies all benefit from lightweight construction. State-of-the-art lightweight design concepts not only reduce weight and save on materials, they are also used to develop innovative materials that can be used in many other applications. Speakers, trade professionals and exhibitors met on 18 September at the "Lightweight Construction" international technology symposium at EMO Hannover 2007 to discuss super-lightweight engines, new drive solutions for mechanical engineering, sheet metal innovations, lightweight structures and new materials. Dr. Marco Schikorra from the Mechanical Engineering faculty at the Institute of Forming Technology and Lightweight Construction said, "In view of the effort to reduce CO2 emissions, the issue of lightweight construction is a top priority. For example, the aviation industry is spending up to EUR 500,000 to cut the mass by one percent. FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) is also a key issue. FRP is already used in the production of the fuselage and upper and lower wings of the Boeing 787, the Dreamliner. In terms of alloys, aluminum-lithium is a key focal point in aviation. Although ten times costlier to produce than conventional materials, it is ten percent less dense."

Twin-Loader cuts loading and unloading times
At EMO Hannover 2007, Peter Wolters AG, based in Rendsburg, Germany, is
exhibiting a new loading and unloading option for its "AC1000-F" grinding
machine - the Twin-Loader. In each cycle, two carriers can be simultaneously
loaded or unloaded depending on the requirements, thus reducing the time it
takes the carriers to move to and from the machine. Thanks to its modular
design, the Twin-Loader can be adapted, as required, to suit different
operating conditions. Twin-Loaders also support further expansion options -
they can, for example, be retrofitted by end customers to include workpiece
handling or a deburring station.
